Midnight mass

For this project, I was assigned to make a movie/TV show poster using just illustrations of my own. The show I had decided to go for was Midnight Mass by Mike Flanagan, which is in the horror genre, and that’s why I went for the dark ambiances and mysterious feeling when it came to this project.

While getting into the brainstorming part and the sketching part of the project, I had come up with many different choices other than Midnight Mass. I had choices like Rocky, Nope by Jordan Peele, The Truman Show, etc. I had decided to go for Midnight Mass as my final choice because I felt like I had more ideas going into it.

As mentioned before, I had chosen this TV show because I had more ideas compared to my other choices. In the brainstorming phase my first idea was having two silhouettes who are the main characters of the show, and they would be shaped as a skull. Also, one of the characters would be giving a drink to the other person, as this is a focal point to the show. I had scratched up the idea because I felt like two characters shaping into something was something common, and I had decided to go for a different approach, which was having flames shaping into a silhouette of one of the main antagonists of the show, and I wanted to put that silhouette behind a church because in the show it focuses a lot inside and around a church.

When I was finishing up this project, I started playing around and doing that. I had come up with four different concepts before finalizing and choosing my final concept. I had decided to go for the red and black one because my illustrations had a lot going on already, and I felt like the final version I had chosen minimizes the clutter that was going on with my other concepts, making the eyes hurt less when looking at the poster. It also went for what I was aiming for, which is what I mentioned earlier, and it’s that dark ambiance and mysterious feeling when it came to the horror genre.
